Hey Neb! What gear do you use? |
Lead | |
|
Compute wise? I'm looking to invest into something more beneficial for graphics, video, web tv, and sound, so i need a starting point, on what's good affordable quality, and basically what parts do what on a computer.
can you help? |

Well, even though you ask for Nebs advice, i could chip in with some info:
1. Look for any pc with more than 2.0 ghz cpu. The majority of pcs have Intels, but if you can find an AMD equipped pc thats even better. 2. Most baseline pcs have 512 MB of RAM, for what you want to do with your PC you might need double that. You can purchase a pc with the 512 MB of RAM and then save some cash and buy the extra memory stick which goes for around $70-$100 bucks. The PC i bought last year has 512 MB and a 2.4 GHz AMD chip and i use it to run my graphics software only (Photoshop, Corel Draw; Illustrator, etc etc.) and it runs excellent. 3. You'll need a huge Hard Drive, anything over 100 GB will due just fine and right now it would be very difficult to find a new PC with less than a 80 GB HD so it wont be difficult at all. 4. Video and Sound cards can be very expensive on their own, so i suggest looking for a PC with Sound/video/graphics cards by NVidia or ATI already installled. You'll need to save up at least $600 - $700 for a PC with the minimum requirements i listed above. Do some research Hunter, i spent months looking for the right Pc to meet my needs, heres a link of PCs for you to check out whats within your price range and what you are looking for:www.pcmag.com/category2/0,1874,4,00.asp |

No problem dude.
One last thing, most of the newer pcs already have DVD burners so thats something else to not to worry about. |

Hey Hunter,
Batfan pretty much nailed it... 2.0 Ghz is good... although if you're looking to save some cash... look for 1.6 to 1.8 Ghz machines... as they'll typically be a couple bucks cheaper... and not all that much slower that you'd probably notice. And I like AMD over Intel... although for the 'everyday user' there's really no real discernable difference... they both do the same thing... The 'difference' is that AMD chips handle graphics a little better, and Intel handles computations better... I actually build my own pc's... usually cheaper for me...cuz' I can piece stuff together... (and my wife doesn't suspect 'smaller purchases' of components... whereas she would definately notice if I went out and bought something big...) But... sometimes it's cheaper in the long run to pick up a 'prefab' box. Sony Viao's aren't cheap, but they're 'usually' pretty good machines... (I had one a couple years back, and did a helluva lot with it), and if memory serves... Neil's on one of them now... HP's are typically better then Dell's, but I imagine it's a lot like Fords and Chevy's... those work well enough for most people... I'm just sorta in the 'custom car' phase myself. Definately at LEAST a gig of memory... anything less is uncivilized... IF you wanna watch/record TV stuff on it... look into an ATI card... I've used em' in the past and they've worked alright for me. Also, if you get one o' them 'newfangled' Windows Media Center pc's... you can do a lot of the 'tv recording' on that box... (My mom does a bunch of that) However, if you are downloading or recording TV shows... you WILL want a DVD burner... cuz that stuff takes up WAY too much room on the harddrive. A DVD burner isn't a necessity... but it sure is handy. And yeah... definately look for a 100+gig hard drive... that'll give ya' the room to 'spread your wings!' You'll also want to invest in a good monitor... the bigger the better... (I'm actually running two now!) Flatscreens are great... but expensive... I have (2) 19" CRT monitors (the big boxy kind), which kills my deskspace... but... what are ya' gonna do. As far as sound... a good card... Soundblaster Audigy (or whatever NEW cards they have now) are good... but you'll probably be alright with whatever... they all work pretty good. Invest in a good set of speakers... and you'll never know the difference... Hope that points ya' in the right direction... -Nebbish! |

Yea, it's starting too. I'm not talking about t.v. as mucn as I'm talking about recording, and editing my own movies, the ones I film with a camera. Thanks for the info. I'll be back w/ more questions!
