Well in my case some of these strips turn into pages but still I count them as one strip. So on occasion I like to ask people to shout out an object or whatever and i like to try and work it into my stuff. 100 strips is alot of paper and ink and alot can happen in those strips. So, if you're willing and you think it might be fun, shout out some objects. You might see them pop up now and then. -Hunter

I've been checking out the first few entries in The Gutters and I like how this challenge is progressing. I think your focus will just get sharper if you can continue rolling with this.

Anyway,of course I back you a 100 percent,waaay back where there's no shooting,and I was thinking that maybe concepts would work as well as miscellaneous items to get the ball rolling as an aid in producing new strip ideas? If you check the newspaper funnies,the strips have almost nothing but recurring themes and the same gags just dressed up differently. I haven't done much study,but a lot begin one way and the tag/gag goes another. Pretty simple stuff. A few examples would be like: Some action ends in being stymied, painting yourself into a corner. Similiarly,some action becomes 'more complicated than I thought'. Problem encountered,'hmm what I need to do is--',but an unforseen result. With these previous three,something can always come in from left field to make the gag. A more ambitious treatment that requires characterization more than sight gags could be described like: The unbearable lightness of being an: asshole,a doofus,an antisocial grinch,ect. The punchline consists of the protagonist reaffirming his/her character to comical effect. It's still just setting up the bowling pins in the first few panels to knock 'em down at the end. Of course,if it were really this easy,then I could do it! Anyway,I just wanted to throw this out as a possibility when the genuine muse says to you,"not tonight,I have a headache". Wait,if you're my muse,then that means I have a headache too. OWWW! So,keep us posted,how's this coming along? Dived into any inking yet?

Real world, work etc. I did manage to pencil a few more but no, no inking yet. I'm not sure what my approach is gonna be on the inking yet. I'm re-arranging the whole house and my studio, so that means, I'll probably taking the computer out of this room and just leaving the art table. you know for better focus. I'm considering when it comes to inks not inking over my originals. Here's why. I have a small light tracing box that fits a standard sized piece of paper. It's hit or miss w/ using this sometimes cause if the paper moves, i'm fucked. Or if the light is just too dull, it's a strain and a pain in the ass to ink it. But, I also have my glass desk. I'm wondering about taping down the 2 pieces of paper on to that and beaming lights up underneath to have a really nice size of a tracing area, i'm not sure if it'll work yet, I haven't tried it. Why not ink over the originals someone may ask? Well besides not wanting to ruin the originals w/ my shitty inks which often happens, I also want to find what's the best method of inking for me, i want to experiment even w/ a brush and some nibs. So, if I use the tracing method I'll be able to do more than one, then when I find what I'm really comfortable with, get going on all the inks. That and when I draw/pencil I have a real heavy hand, and I often carve into the bristol esp. now that i've been using a 4-H pencil. So when I do ink sometimes it fucks up cause there's grooves and knicks in the paper. Using a clean sheet of paper my hope is that I can just glide over the pencils while simultaneously correcting anything I didn't like before hand. I realize this may slow things down a bit, but shit I want to improve my craft not just meet the challenge. 100 strips and not learning a thing just doesn't make any sense to me. The objects you've mentioned will work great for the one strip I did have planned. I didn't have trouble w/ that actually. It's funny you mentioned the "muse" thing cause I actually drew my "muse" into a strip, lol. My characters are having a convo w/ it. I'll try to finish that one up this week so you can see it. anyways I hope that shed some light on this thing. I'm nearly at 30 strips give or take, some are still unfinished.

It's really coming along then,also separating the computer from your drawing area sounds like the right thing to do. Sometimes I can almost hear the machine's siren call:" waste time,waste time,you know you want to"! A couple more alternatives to inking directly on original pencil art are darkening a scanned version in photoshop or inking copies. Digitally darkening scanned pencils is common in comics work now,but I'm not sure if it would go over well with humorous stuff. I'm not tech savvy enough to detail the process,but it wouldn't be hard to find online. As for copies,if you copy fairly clean pencils onto 1 ply bristol,you have a real nice surface to work on. No gouges,a copy to ink with brush,one with pen and one for trial & error. 1 ply goes through the copy machine as easily as bond paper,even though I've used 2 ply too. You'll have to tape it down to ink as it's pretty flimsy. The only real drawback is that leftover pencil marks are impossible to completely erase. There's always white-out or cleaning up in Photoshop and you'll have an inked 'original' on good paper. Sounds like you're really clipping along with this.Keep 'em comin'! Dave Sim says we all have 2000 bad pages to get out of our system first,I think I have 3000,but sometime around 2017 -- look out!
