Just wanted to let you know that if you swing by www.zebramag.com you'll see eight pages of me doing my retro-Marvel thing,colored by Greg Moutafis. Better yet,there's eight ,somewhat exquisite,pages by old school bullpenner Matt Putnam-Puillot,hi Matt! And other stuff as well! Jameson Lee,who scripted Matt's story,puts out an annual anthology book (one so far!) and has some pretty cool material online. Zebra's just starting out and there's no money involved-- What,you say you were paid a million bazillion dollars,Matt?!!-- but I think they're pretty open to subs,check 'em out!

Awesome, Ed! Man, that was pretty trippy.... I especially dug "pages" 4 and 8!
(Who's the Dormammu-esque looking floating head in the lower right corner of "page" 8?) Zebra sounds like an interesting venture... And it was nice to finally see a (pipe-chomping) pic of Matt! (Totally NOT what I had envisioned him looking like!) "Effin Kids" was cool! Once the kids turned into monsters I was reminded of that old RAMPAGE video game... LOL Good stuff, gents! |

As regards page 8,Neil,I just tried to cram as much Ditko iconography in there as possible! So,that floating head and everything else there was copped from various issues of Strange Tales featuring Dr. Strange and some of Sturdy Steve's incredible artwork in some early Creepy and Eerie stories(Warren Pub.)

Sweet! I wasn't aware Ditko had done work for those Warren books.
What else have you been working on? |

Re: Zebra Comics | ||

Thanks for asking! Wish I had something exciting to say as an answer... Well,I still do most of the covers for Jim Kingman's review 'zine Comic Effect. That gig got me a free copy of Alter Ego from TwoMorrows Pub. when they reproduced a Comic Effect cover as part of a tribute to the Silver Age. I probably wouldn't have bought it on my own,but,ya know,free! The rest of the time I'm working on stories featuring my character Teregrin. I've got an 80 page collection ready to go,but it's being universally ignored and I have schlepped it around to almost every middlesized publisher in the universe! I would've thought it was a perfect fit for publishers like Silent Devil,Arcana,ect. but it's definitely a tough nut. Maybe ribald tales of a fifth century semi-scoundrel isn't enough of a 'high concept'. Can't give up though,I'm in too deep-- could be deep thought or deep shit,I can't tell yet,wait,what's that smell?!

Ed, get that shit in print, then show it around to publishers.

Re: Zebra Comics | ||

Very interesting,that might be the way to go,Breeze. I've seen some 'mock-ups' just copies really,but copied on both sides of good glossy paper and stapled like a regular comic that look fantastic,as good as offset. As far as real self-publishing,that's not in the budget for now,but it's a beautiful dream!

Geez, I should stop in more often!
"Effin Kids" was a lot of fun. It was more challenging than I thought to work on a collaboration - I've been a creative hermit for too long. When I'm writing for myself, I can just put in fun stuff to draw(which is why all my comics have monsters and bugs for characters) and go easy on myself with a low panel-to-page ratio. Luckily, "Effin Kids" had a lot of cool stuff and Jameson allowed a couple changes to the script where I was worried things were going to get a little cramped. Knucklehead Komics

Do stop in more often, Matt. We're trying to get things going again.
Oh, by the by, ECP4 is finally to be fixed. Neb and I will get together this weekend for the final editing. Your final page has been inserted. We can finally re-release this book and be proud of it. Neil |

Re: Zebra Comics | ||

Cool, though in my book you guys should be proud anyway since you motivated folks to make some cool comics and put so much work into putting the ECPs together.
My spring and summer have been busy at work and home, cutting down on my internet goofing off time, but things are lightening up. I happened to notice that long shop talk thread in the online comics forum at comicon and thought to myself "you know what this reminds me of...". Then I came right over to the Bullpen to see what's been going on. |

Yup, I'd love to get that magic going back over here.
I've got to focus though, focus! anyways, it's good to see both Matt, Breeze, and Ed back here, even if it's just for a bit. Ed, have you considered your 80 page opus for a web comic? Modern tales does full length comics online, it's starting to pick up. Why pay all that money that you don't have to print a book, when you can cut costs dramatically and put it up on the web for a minimal fee? You get a following then release the printed format w/ some extras when you know you got buyers. |

Matt, dude, you're always welcome at the 'Pen, bro.
I dropped your name at Fanboy Radio for their Indy or Webcomic spotlight show. I'll drop your name again at Wizardworld when I talk to Hinze. ______________________________________________________________

Re: Zebra Comics | ||

Hunter,I've thought about doing exactly that,putting up a webcomic trying to garner enough interest to get it into print. Heck,I have almost 100 pages 'computer screen' format (half a comic page) of another property ready to go. Well,not really ready... It's superheroes,so it NEEDS color. I've never done any digital coloring or posted a webcomic with the archiving and the domains and the registering and the **glavin**.Time and money are a little tight for an unnecessary expenditure too. I hear that with webcomicsnation the process is pretty easy though. I'd like to make a little something from a webcomic to offset expenses and have some besides. Actually,I'm watching the Shoptalk thread over at ComiCon very carefully. When you guys 'go public' and describe all the ends and outs of the process,I may be ready to take the plunge. So,get to work!!
